216: The Quest to Rediscover Humanity At Its Very Best
Part 4 of the Advocacy series
“We don't listen well. We don't want to listen intentionally. We want to tell people immediately why we're right. There seems to be a growing majority of people who prefer echo chambers.”
About this Episode
As the above quote implies, we live in a challenging time in our nation’s history. We’ve always had our divisions. America, as envisioned in various foundational documents, has always been a work in progress; its values more aspirational than realized. But today’s divisions seem different, more acute. People from opposing sides on any number of issues no longer just disagree; they’ve actually come to use the word “hate” when referring to one another.
Stoking the fires, elements of leadership at all levels of government often fail to provide a model for decorum and productive discussion. Various issues plague society and our future: gun violence, race, intolerance, climate, infrastructure, restriction of rights, energy, foreign relations, and so on. Compromise usually seems impossible, as holding onto or accumulating power often outweighs policy.
It’s not unusual to hear talk of another civil war. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we’ve lost our humanity.
Many of us – including me – largely just complain about our national malaise. There is a beacon of action, however.

“There's one quote that I've gravitated toward over the years, and it's by Carl Jung. And he said, ‘The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.’ My wife and I feel blessed to have figured out who we are both together and independently. And we're hoping that the people listening to this and the people who are connecting with us will take the time to figure that out as well because it is life-changing.”
