Getting Unstuck #164: When Is the Right Time to Make Changes in Education?

How about right now?

Openings

“It's not really a question of whether we should or shouldn’t change education now. We need to acknowledge the fact that things have changed since last March and that they changed very rapidly. In some ways, there's no going back. I mean, you know the old expression “You can’t go home again.” We've all been changed drastically by the experiences of the pandemic.”

Kim on why this conversation matters

“There is something really urgent about the moment in time that we’re in right now. Student needs are acute. Across the country, in every school at every level, educators are facing a huge challenge in helping students  make up for missed academic learning.

At the same time, students have intense social needs, as they emerge from the isolation of the pandemic and begin a process of re-socialization. We have a moral imperative to use this moment to correct the inequalities that are apparent in our educational system and that have been amplified by the pandemic. “

Listen for

• Changes in how professional development is already being delivered.

• New roles for teachers.

• Broadening the definition of SEL.

• The movement toward greater student agency.

Closing

“Students have had an incredible amount of agency over the past year and just deciding how they're going to interact with school. And I believe that we will be missing out on an incredible opportunity if we expect kids to just come back and fall into their routine and just do what they're told and, you know, not not have that freedom, not employ all of those skills that they learned over the last year.”
