Getting Unstuck: Taking Charge of Our Mental Health – a Conversation with Dr. Carla Cooke

The [institutional racism that I experienced] gave me the hard life lesson that there are going to be some situations that are not fair. But those situations don’t have to speak to who you are – you don’t have to accept that. You need to understand your own value in the work you do. And therefore, I didn’t carry that stigma. It didn’t become something that became an impediment for me moving forward.

Today on Getting Unstuck

How do you best manage life’s transitions, and the inevitable ups and downs of life? In this episode of Getting Unstuck, we’ll hear some interesting suggestions from Dr. Carla Cooke: psychotherapist, speaker, radio host, and author.

Sometimes when life throws us off our game, it’s easy to fall prey to the victim mentality. Dr. Cooke turns the tables on that limiting attitude and instead advocates what she calls “Emotional Empowerment” — an awareness that we are in charge of and responsible for our emotional health. There are strategies we can adopt — filling emotional containers, avoiding stinking thinking and establishing front-end boundaries — to increase our functioning and to live optimally.

We can’t change another person; we can only change ourselves.

Food for Thought

Dr. Cooke mentioned the “miracle question.” On a scale of 0-10 where “0” is low and “10” is high, how would you rate your mental health? If it’s at a “7” for example, how might you use “Emotional Empowerment” to raise it to an “8” or “9”?
